The Patsasaurus' Take on One Hit Wonders

So as I am spacing out listening to music at work, I came across a band called Nine Days. Now for me this band isn't a one hit kinda band, I have almost all their cd's...or I guess mp3's these days. Well as some on you know, other's might not, cause they aren't obsessed with 90's music. *cough cough* They had a hit song at the end of the 90's called Absolutely (Story of a Girl). "This is the story of a girl, who cried a river and drowned the whole world." Yeah, now you know what I'm talking about. Well, when this song came on I started to think, "What would life be like if I had a one hit wonder?" I soon realized it would suck pretty hard. One hit wonders are one of those things that would be awesome for about 3 months, but then you give it up for a little bit and your life sucks. yeah. Well I started thinking of more one hit wonders. Reel Big Fish, Semisonic, Hootie and the Blowfish...kinda, Spin Doctors, Blessid Union of Souls, and so on. These 90's bands were doomed from the start, what with all the Backstreet Boys, and N*SYNC (Wayyy better than Backstreet). If rock was a person it would be on a respirator. I guess if I were a one hit wonder it would be nice, I mean you get the paparazzi for like 2 months then you never have to deal with them again. On the flip side you're only famous for 2 months, but you still get to play those shows that people go to only to hear the last song you're gonna play. I think it would be tough, especially if you didn't accept that you'll never be famous again.

One of my favorite bands is Reel Big Fish, and that's partially because of their big hit Sell Out...but honestly, I hadn't hear that song when I decided I like them. It's their whole attitude toward being a one hit wonder. It's like they know they are far past their glory days, and they make fun of how popular they used to be. Not to mention their music is GOOD! Then again, I am quite partial toward obscure bands.

I like how people these days can tell if a song is gonna be a one hit wonder. I mean look at bands like Metro Station. The only reason they got signed in the first place is because they are related to the stars of the Disney show Hannah Montana, but they had one hit and I haven't hear anything from them since. It could just be me getting older and more musically mature, but I could have guessed that they weren't gonna be around for long at all.

This is one of those things I'd like to hear opinions on, so let me know what you think in a comment.

Have a great day!

  1. Well personally, I rather like quite a few of the Hootie and the Blowfish songs. I guess it is all about perspective. :P

Being a one hit wonder would suck for me. I don't like failing on anything I attempt, so to continue to fail to reproduce that new hit would hit pretty hard.
